Introduction
We human beings are the dominating species on this planet. Our intelligence makes us the dominating species. We have learned secrets about other species and unfolded some secrets of the universe itself. Our brain power has enabled us to accomplish wonders. Our ancestors were as intelligent as us. Some of the modern technology and modern way of living are developed and inspired by the work of our ancestor. No doubt human brain has achieved so much. From building fascinating empires to finding secrets of the seas and oceans to exploring space. Thanks to our intelligence we were able to accomplish the impossible but we don’t talk and wonder as much as we should about the human body system. There is a massive work of organs, cells and tissues happening inside our bodies every second of our lives and we don't even acknowledge it. Our organs and cells form us. In this blog I will share with you the major systems of our body.
Human Body Structure
Human body is a complex and highly organized system. It is a structure made up with cells, tissues and organs. It is not possible to write about the entire human body system in a single piece of writing. As much as the science is advanced there is still a lot about our human body system that we still do not know. But we human beings have made a lot of progress and there is a lot about our body system that we know. The major systems that are responsible for our body’s function are: Skeletal, Cardiovascular, Nervous, Endocrine, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, and Reproductive system. We will briefly examine all of them.
The adult skeletal system has over 200 bones. The skeletal system holds the body together and gives our body shape, allows movement and protect organs and tissues. It provides anchor point for the muscular system which consists of three type of muscles: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac.
Did You Know?
We are born with 300 bones. By the time we reach adulthood we have 206 bones. But some people might have an extra bone such as wormian bones. The wormian bones look different from person to person. Some people can have a lot wormian bones while others might have one or none at all.
The cardiovascular system consists of heart, veins, arteries and capillaries.
Cardiovascular system is responsible for providing adequate circulation of blood to the body. It supplies oxygen, white blood cells, hormones and nutrients to our body.
Fact About Our Heart
Our heart can continue to beat for about three minutes even if we remove it from the body. Our heart is capable of doing that because of self-excitation which means the heart muscles itself determines when it is going to beat. It is an important function because if someone gets a head injury and the person becomes unconscious and the brain can’t tell the heart to beat; the heart works independently and will continue to beat in such situation.
Made up with the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, and spinal nerves is the nervous system. The nervous system is highly complex system and sends back and forth messages between our brain and body. It is center of all mental activates such as thought, learning and memory etc.
This infrastructure created by neurons blood muscles allows three other systems to regulate the body environment. Those three systems are: endocrine, lymphatic, and urinary system.
Endocrine system is series of complex network of glands that work as messengers. It is carried by the nervous system to help regulate the body’s process.
Lymphatic system is part of the immune system. The lymphatic system keeps body fluid in balance and defends the body against infections. Cardiovascular and nervous system are also utilized by the lymphatic system.
Urinary system also known as the Renal system is composed of: Kidneys, Ureters, Bladder, and Urethra. The urinary system maintains the body’s electrolyte levels and filters wastes from the blood. The waste is send to the blood vessels into the kidneys and then expelled as urine.
All of these systems of course require energy to function. The two essential requirements for our body to function are oxygen and nutrients. The two system that are responsible for ensuring our needs for oxygen and nutrients are respiratory system and digestive system.
Respiratory system consists of nose, mouth, throat, the voice box, and lungs. It extracts life-giving oxygen from the air we breathe by removing waste gases.
Digestive system is made up with seven organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. The adult's digestive tract is approximately 30 foot series of organs. The food enters from the mouth and is turned into energy.
Reproductive system is the reason why we exist. If we stop reproducing there will be simply no one to replace us once we are all gone; human race will extinct from planet earth.
