Introduction
Battery- a single most powerful and revolutionary invention. Today our lives are shaped and almost can’t exist in so many different ways because of this one invention. Yet it is also a single invention that we don't almost recognize its power and its effect on our lives. We use the world battery so many times a day but we don’t even know how much we are in need of batteries. In this blog I will share with you who coined the term battery and the definition of the battery, who invented the first electrical battery, how electric battery revolution has shaped our world today and the future of the batteries.
Who Coined The Term Battery & Definition Of Battery
The term battery was coined by American scientist Benjamin Franklin in 1748. He used the military term 'battery' to describe several charged glass plates.
Definition: Battery is a device that generates electricity through chemical reaction. It was the main source of electricity before electric grids and generators.
Background
In 1780, while dissecting a dead frog fixed to a brass hook Italian physician and physicist Luigi Galvani touched the frog's leg with an iron scalpel. The muscles of the leg twitched. It led him to believe that the energy that caused twitching came from the leg itself. Galvani called it 'animal electricity.' His observation laid a foundation for a new science and opened a door for the invention of electrical batteries.
Alessandro Volta
Italian physician Alessandro Volta disagreed with Galvani. He believed that the contraction was caused by the joining of two metals by a moist intermediary. Volta conducted several experiments to verify his hypothesis and published the results in 1791; and invented world's first electrical battery. He called it Voltaic Pile. Voltaic pile was the first battery that was able to continuously provide an electric current to a circuit. The battery was made by stacking several pairs of alternating zinc and copper discs separated by paper or clothes soaked in brine. Electrolyte electricity flowed through the pile when the top and bottom were connected by a wire. It was a simple and reliable source of electric current.
But Was Battery Actually Invented By Volts In 1800s?
It is believed that battery wasn’t invented by Volta in 1800s but by an unknown person two millennia earlier. In 1936, near Baghdad, a city in present day Iraq, a clay pot was discovered by the archeologists. It had a copper cylinder and iron rod inside it. Scientists have been speculating if this could be the world’s oldest battery. It's evident by experiment that theoretically it could have worked however it is not established yet if it was actually used as a battery.
Highlight Of Some Of The Events That Shaped Our World Today
Telegraph was invented in 1837 and was revolutionary. Telegraph was initially used by the governments, diplomats, and the military to exchange information. It changed over the time, new models were introduced and became more popular. Telegraph connected people across the globe. By telegraph information were exchanged more faster and people were able to know what happened across the globe weeks ago. The true media revolution was made by the telegraph. Readers in one country were able to know what was going on in the other country. Telegraph, a very expensive technology of that time was powered by batteries because the electric grid was not fully developed yet and was unreliable.
The battery powered telegraph also changed and raised the tourism industry. Radio stations were installed on ships which allowed to contact the outside world at any time. Before it was extremely dangerous to travel on ships.
Telephone initially was also powered by batteries. Telephone connected the world and created more jobs. Later wireless mobile phones became more popular. These mobile phones were portable, over the time became smaller and more powerful.
iPhone a revolutionary smart phone which is not just a phone but also small portable laptop in ones pocket. It shape our lives today and for many of us life without smartphone is hard to imagine. This smartphone works with built in batteries.
Tesla’s roadster sports car was introduced in 2008. It is the world’s first vehicle to be fully powered by lithium ion batteries. Overall many governments are committed to bring more electric cars. The future of the electric cars depends on many factors, one of them is price of the electrical battery.
Race For The Batteries
Batteries will be more and more in demand. Race for the batteries is on, as the technology progress continues so does the race for the batteries. Many industries are trying to make batteries which are cheaper, eco-friendly and powerful. The goal is to make alternative for the metal batteries- make organic batteries: organic batteries which are rechargeable and more sustainable.
