William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare is one of the most famous playwright and poet. Today in many cultures, Shakespeare is seen to be their own as his work is translated in many languages. Have you ever questioned or wondered why Shakespeare's work is so famous? Is he well known even today because his work was so excellent? There are some scholars and historians who do not believe that his work was his own.
Let's briefly examine Shakespeare's life.
Shakespeare was celebrated and advertised by the British government as their empire expended and English was enforced on others. Shakespeare’s birth certificate does not exist and the exact date of his birth is not known because of a powerful plague that struck England when he was born. But the record of his baptism exists. The average age to get married at Shakespeare's time was 24; he got married when he was 18 because his wife was already pregnant. By the age of 20 Shakespeare had three children.
Shakespeare went to a very fine school of his time and learned grammar. He knew few different languages: French, Portuguese and Latin. He was also able to read the bible
Shakespeare's Literacy Criticism
One of the criticism that some scholars and historians make is that Shakespeare's work is based on other sources; he manipulated literature from other languages. The famous Romeo and Juliet is based on Egyptian Antony and Cleopatra. His new vocabulary words were basically a translation of other languages' word.
The other criticism is that Shakespeare's poetry is sexually explicit and describes male sexual fantasies. Some even say that in the history of English language nobody is as sexually explicit in their work as Shakespeare was. In the death scene of Romeo and Juliet, the word ‘die’ referred to orgasm as in Shakespeare's days orgasm was also called die.
Shakespeare's narrative poem, ‘The rape of Lurace’ was famous among undergraduate students because it was sexually explicit. Some students even said they would keep master Shakespeare's poem under their pillow when they’d sleep.
